My research interests are rooted in community and applied ecology. I am fascinated by natural and life histories of Afrotropical birds, patterns of community composition and structure, behaviour (especially facilitative behaviours like mixed-species flocking and ant-following), as well as the synergistic effects of land use change and climate change on birds, other organisms they interact with (including humans), and the landscapes they occupy. Furthermore, the dynamics of land-use in Africa, ranging from forms and extents of commercial, illegal, and informal logging in addition to the expansion and transformation of agricultural land in tropical landscapes and agroforestry practices, particularly in coffee. Finally, I am also fascinated by in the evolution of conservation as we know it, from the incorporation of local ecological knowledge into protected area and landscape management, to community-based management, and the weaving of Western citizen science approaches with the generation and transmission of traditional ecological knowledge at the community level.
